Running Smarter When Real Life Gets in the Way

Running Smarter When Real Life Gets in the Way
NB Vongo V6

I’m Max — a plumber by trade, side-hustler by necessity, and long-distance runner by choice. Between full-time work, odd jobs, and real life, I still train for marathons and log miles wherever they fit. Not because it’s convenient, but because consistency matters more than perfect conditions.

Metrics & Miles is where I track what actually works when you’re trying to train seriously without living like an elite athlete. No coach’s corner, no podium speeches, just real decisions made by someone in the middle of the pack, balancing mileage with long workdays and limited recovery time.

Running, especially marathon training, has a way of exposing everything. Fatigue, discipline, patience. Mile 22 isn’t that different from hour 10 on the job, both test how well you manage effort, fuel, and mindset. That overlap is what this site is built around.

Here you’ll find honest reviews of the gear I actually use, from shoes and hydration to everyday tools that either help or quietly sabotage training. I’ll share how I adapt workouts around long shifts, what I change when fatigue creeps in, and which metrics matter versus which ones just add noise. You’ll also see how training fits (or doesn’t) alongside work, relationships, and whatever energy is left over at the end of the day.

This isn’t a glossy influencer page or a collection of shortcuts promising instant speed. It’s for runners who train early, late, or whenever they can. The weekend warriors. The 5 a.m. grinders. The people squeezing long runs between responsibilities and still chasing personal bests.

If that sounds like you, you’re in the right place. Expect real gear breakdowns, marathon prep insights, and the occasional complaint about tempo runs after a long day.

Thanks for being here.
Go one more mile.
